What are some exercises that build muscle in your back?

by Jerry Brown on May 7, 2010

I just wanted to know because I have a really skinny back… people can see the top part of my spine. I have a high metabolism so eating a lot wouldn’t work. I guess I’ll try to build muscle there, but how?
I don’t really have a place with exercising equipment so… I need exercises that you only need like a bar or dumbells to use…

Pull ups, push ups, chin ups, muscle ups and dips. Master these exercises, 4 sets of 10 reps each on the pull ups, chin ups, muscle ups and dips. Work your way up to being 2 sets 50 reps of push ups. Believe me, your back and shoulders muscles will develop if you are dedicate yourself to mastering these exercises.

The absolute best excercise to build a wide and strong back is pull-ups. Very old school, no equipment really needed. Wide grip is the best for building the ‘V’ shape. Another good excercise is bent over rows. Using a barbell or dumbells you stand with your back bent at nearly a 90deg angle. You pull the bar from the ground with your back towards your stomach. You can find articles on-line about proper explanation, but those 2 are tops for a great back.

I’m not sure if building up your lats/rear delts/lower back is going to make your spine stick out less. I’d guess only fat will do that.

I don’t care how high your metabolism is, if you eat more then you use (and use includes growth) you gain fat. Period.

You could buy a pull up bar. They are pretty cheap around $15. Then do pull ups and chin ups. These are great back and arm exercises.
